7. Looking back at my preliminary activity task, what do I feel I've learnt in the progression from it?

Preliminary Activity

Music Magazine

You can see from my music magazine front cover, contents page and double page spread, compared to my preliminary activity school magazine front cover and contents page, that my skills have improved vastly from it. This is because I have had more time on using fireworks so I have developed new skills which made my music magazine look a lot more professional. I also learnt, from the preliminary activity what looks good on a magazine front cover and contents page. For example in my preliminary activity I have used the same font on the front cover, so there isn't any font variation. As I didnt have font size variation in my preliminary activity, I used it on my music magazine, as it created emphasis on certain words. I also learnt to take pictures for my magazine in a much more professional way, instead of just going around school and taking pictures of random people. I learnt about camera shots and angles which helped me take pictures for my music magazine. When I took pictures for it, it was planned out like an actual photoshoot. I used a white background so it looks like it was done at a studio, whereas in my preliminary activity the images had things in the background. As I learnt to take pictures against plain backgrounds, this meant I could create visual syntax more carefully on my page. I also found out that using one model instead of two is more effective on a front cover. When making my music magazine I was able to compare and bring ideas from existing products, which meant my work was more planned and thought out. I also identified who my target audience was and brand identity and values, which meant I was able to cater my products towards them. Overall I feel I have learnt a lot from my preliminary activity as I learnt what looked good and what didn't.

4. Who would be the audience for your media product?

My Ideal Reader

My ideal reader is a student (15-21) or someone who works part time (so they have spare time to go out), even young professionals ( who have money to spend on gigs and festivals and music related stuff). Some of these people will still live with their parents (as they are young or just want to save money), others will live in small apartments (which are not too expensive). These people value good music and enjoy it a lot, meaning they are willing to spend a lot of money on music related things. They aspire to have a rock and roll lifestyle and look up to rock artists. They like going to small gigs and to see up and coming artists of the ‘rock’ genre around their local city as these are usually cheaper, they like to go to these smaller gigs to socialise with people of similar interests to them. Twitter is also a way they like to socialise as many fan bases are formed on twitter. My reader (+18 ones) like going to the pub to have a drink, rather than going to the club (as there are more mainstream people there and mainstream music). They like to invest their money into clothes that show their music influences (e.g. Band tees and leather jackets) and like to dress like their favourite artists. They are also into vintage fashion, (like 60s mod style). They like to shop in vintage shops and fashionable shops like urban outfitters. They like to buy music related things, like albums and records. They like going to places like the custard factory because urban village is there. They all aspire to drive expensive cars, but at the moment may drive a cheaper, second hand car, due to their young ages. Most of them own iPhones as they can access social media sites on them so they can easily communicate with their friend and can easily listen to music. They like to download their music off iTunes and like to make music playlists on Spotify as it is free.

Analysis of a Double Page Spread

This is a double page spread featuring the band, Foals. Yannis, who is the lead singer is pictured on the left holding up some bones, his image is used on a whole side. On the other side of the page the rest of the band members are featured, but there images are much smaller and in Black and White. There is a pug at the top of the right page, that says, 2013 biggest albums. There is a Strapline just before the article starts, it is in blue and black, the house style. The page number is featured on the bottom of the page. Foals is on the left on Yannis' picture.
